What is an escape room?

It’s pretty obvious that your objective is to escape, but how and why probably needs some clarification. The essential principle of escape rooms is that they are real life puzzle-solving games. You get locked inside a room for 45 to 60 minutes, with an emergency exit always available in the event of emergencies. Before the time runs out you need to solve a series of puzzles in order to unlock the door. In the room (or rooms, as some escape rooms have multiple connected rooms you need to escape from), you’ll find clues that help you crack a code, or a key to help you unlock a lockbox or door, and escape.

In many rooms, you get to ask for one or two hints, for when you get really stuck. You can also always communicate with gamemaster outside via walkie-talkie or over an intercom in the room. Puzzles may be hi-tech and include computers, tablets, and special effects. Or they may be lo-tech with three-digit padlocks and lockboxes. The harder the room, the harder the puzzles, so if you want to try the most hard-core type of escape room, you will find many handwritten notes, GPS coordinates, pattern recognition and much more.

What makes a good escape room?

For any type of entertainment experience—there needs to be creativity, coherence, and excitement. The same goes for escape rooms, and these three components are essential when it comes to making a good escape room.

The first important piece of an escape room is its back story. The whole reason people do escape rooms is to be challenged in a unique environment, so the game design needs to immerse the players in another world. Gamemasters too need to help the players get into the zone with a well prepared backstory and appropriately handling during the escape experience.

The second, but equally important piece, is the room’s puzzles. They need to be creative, stimulating, appeal to common logic, and fit into the theme of the room. Doing a little bit of math, Scrabble, or flipping through a bunch of books on a bookshelf is fine, as long as the puzzles all work and fit into the room’s theme. There is no room for faulty logic or broken clues.

What makes a bad escape room?

Speaking of logic and broken clues, the gameplay should be linear. There is nothing worse than finding a bunch of clues all at the same time and then discovering that they all connect to different puzzles and there is no way to figure out which clues goes where. If you encounter this problem, know that you are dealing with bad escape room. Similarly, having too many props and decoration can confuse players.

Another huge error in the escape room experience is poor delivery of the backstory. Sometimes your gamemaster will fail to set up your rooms backstory—or will do it poorly—and there is nothing worst then a lackluster start to an escape room. It totally kills the enthusiasm.

What are the common themes in escape rooms?

There’s a lot of variety in escape rooms, but most of them have mystery, crime, or fantasy stories at their core. The best ones have elements of horror, and players love the jump-scares and gloomy atmosphere. The spookiest rooms have murderers, serial killers, ancient curses, and some really creepy decoration. Other rooms go an extra mile to make everything customized to the theme, so you can have incredible vampire-themed rooms, with essential elements of horror, and very cool props. Zombie themed-rooms can be really scary, especially when they are not just your typical undead, but scary flesh-eating maniacs. There are some pretty good ones with archeological themes, from ancient pyramids, to secret tombs, even haunted libraries. Elements of Japanese culture are common themes, from anime characters to legends of the souls of the undead looking for revenge. There are ones with creepy children and their dolls, and more hi-tech ones that put you in a role of CIA, FBI agents, or even astronauts.

Why go to an escape room?

For the most obvious reason—because it’s fun! Not only are escape rooms just a great time, they are also stimulating and they increase your problem-solving skills. Not to mention how awesome it is to bond with friends and work towards a mutual goal. People act totally different in escape rooms than they do in normal life, and you’ll be surprised to see what your friends do when that lock turns. . .

But more than that, success in an escape room depends on group communication, which makes them perfect for team building events. They’re also pretty good for dates, just so long as you’re sure he or she isn’t super competitive. . . They lock the two of you inside a dark room for about 60 minutes! If you’re not both totally freaked out, it’s super romantic.

Be safe when you’re in the escape room!

Escape rooms are very safe, but there are a few things to keep in mind. For instance, do not mess with any electrical appliances, electrical sockets, or electricity in general. Don’t use brute force and don’t damage the room. Climbing bookshelves and messing with ceiling tiles is never (ever!) a way to a clue. Just keep your wits about you and you’ll be fine!

How can you escape an escape room?

There is no simple guide to escaping room successfully, but there are some great tips. For example, if you find mismatching clues, you’re almost certainly dealing with two puzzles at the same time, so split your group into two teams and focus only on one set of clues at the time. You should pay attention to words and numbers that are scattered around the room, as they will positively be part of the solution. A positive attitude and open mind are necessary for these games, so try to have fun, even when dealing with most bizarre head-scratching riddles. Remember to touch everything (but not the electrical sockets, remember). Everything inside a room is there for a reason, and if it’s just there for decoration, you’ll know.

#1 – It’s okay to be chill

When you’re dancing hip-hop, you need to relax your body to let the music guide you. It’s okay to be chill, and in fact it’s better. You definitely do not want to look stiff. Even though some hip-hop moves like locking may feel a bit rigid, you need to relax to achieve those smooth moves. There’s no way you’ll be able to enjoy the rhythm if you’re moving like you’re got a stick up your backside.

#2 – Loosen up your feet and arms

This isn’t ballroom dancing, you don’t need to create a frame around your body with your arms. And in fact, you want your legs and arms to be loose so that they’re relaxed (see above) and ready to go where your moves take them. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and keep your knees slightly bent so you’re ready to try any dance move that comes your way. Arms by your sides—not crosses, not fidgeting. Just let them hang so you stay relaxed when you start to move to the music.

#3 – Wear something comfortable

If you want to be able to master all those smooth moves, you’ve got to wear comfortable clothes. You may choose to wear something more form-fitting when you take your moves on the road—but when you’re learning go for something comfortable.

Even though you’ve just bought some new super cute sneakers and there are about million leggings in your closet that you want to try with that cool crop top you picked up, be sure to wear something that feels good on your skin and that lets you move around with ease. That means sneakers that allow you to slide easily and clothes that let you move. Nothing can spoil a dance class more than tank top slipping off (wardrobe malfunction, here you come), or a stiff shoe putting pressure on your joints.

#4 – Learn the moves

Everything feels challenging at the beginning, but there’s no need to be discouraged when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror during your first class. Don’t worry about nailing the perfect swagger, focus on learning the moves. It’s true that hip hop is a super accessible dance style—almost anyone with a sense of rhythm can pick it up—but that doesn’t mean you can just wing it without learning the basics.

Once you have learned the core moves though, the world is pretty much your dance floor. You can mix and match your moves and create a customized flow that feels all your own. In the beginning, concentrate on remembering the dance patterns. When you do, you’ll have an easier time down the line picking up the speed and improving your overall performance.

#5 – Know your body

Once you know the moves, get to know your body. Hip-hop is special in that to really master it, you need to bring your own personality to each and every movement. And the dance itself is made up of a lot of isolated moves that require focus and precision. To be able to master new moves you need to think about every part of your body as a separate entity. So start with getting to know your body first—try some light yoga or Pilates at home on the side. Continuous movement and exercise will help you learn more about yourself and how your body moves.

#6 – Feel the music

Everything in hop-hop comes back to the music. Whether it’s old school hip-hop like Dr. Dre or more modern hits from Drake and Kanye, the music is what shaped this culture and made it so fun. You need to feel the music to be able to follow the rhythm. Almost every song has a symmetrical pattern, so if you pay attention to the beat and bass, you’ll notice that it all feels so right. The beat is your unspoken dance pattern in everything you do, so relax and let it move through you.

#7 – Start from the bottom

We all start from the bottom, not only Drake. When you’re beginning with hip-hop, don’t get discouraged. Start with the beginner moves like the Dougie, stanky leg, and popping. Even shuffling your feet counts—try the classic T-step or the running man. Anyone can master these moves with just a little bit a rhythm and dedication. Once you’ve nailed the basics, you can whip them out on any dance floor, anywhere. And you can also start layering on the more complicated moves, like moonwalking and the pop, lock, and drop.

#8 – Have fun!

If you’re not having fun, then what are you doing? Hip-hop is all about freedom to express yourself, about the power to be who you are and work with others to create something truly incredible. So have fun while you’re practicing and working out! Let your true self shine through. Stay relaxed, stay calm, and stay focused.

If you still want more, there are a whole bunch of useful online videos that explain the major hip-hop moves in detail, so you can practice at home before hitting a studio. There are plenty of beginning hip-hop classes in the city, though, so don’t stay home for too long! Don’t forget that hip-hop is about you—your body, your movement, your experience. So don’t be afraid to ask your instructor to show you the move again, and be sure to work at your own pace.

#1 – Bring the right people

Sometimes you can lose an escape room before you even get started. The people you’re escaping with are really key to a successful escape. That’s not to say that you should start rating all your relationships on a binary scale of “useful to me in an escape room scenario” and “dead to me,” but it does mean that you should think about your team before you get going. The best teams are made up of diverse minds. If you all think the same way, you’re going to be stepping all over each other solving the same problems—and no one’s going to solve that tricky clue none of you can make heads or tails of. Ideally you want a leader, someone with analytical math skills, and someone with great language skills. You’ll divide and conquer like pros.

#2 – Don’t overdress

You really can overdress for an escape room: leave the pearls at home. You might end up squeezing through secret passageways, climbing ladders, uncovering clues in crawl spaces. There is no such thing as a fancy escape room. Wear comfortable shoes and loose-fitting clothing. You really have no idea where the room will take you.

#3 – Start by searching the room—but don’t be a monster

As soon as the timer starts, you’re going to want to begin searching the room. The first puzzle you crack for every room is unique in that it’s the only one you have no clues to start with. Once you start finding clues and solving puzzles, one puzzle will lead to the next. For the first puzzle—all you’ve got is the room. So first: search everything. Pull out all the clues you can. But don’t be a monster. The gamemaster will usually tell you before you start, certain things will not contain clues. They are just part of the room. No reason for you to pull the electrical sockets out or go up the ceiling tiles.

#4 – Communicate, communicate, communicate

When you’re finding those initial clues, communicate! Yell out everything you find. You beat the escape room if you work together as a group with your pooled knowledge to quickly solve the puzzles. By constantly communicating, you increase the overall knowledge of the group and increase your chances of beating the game. You should keep communicating constantly throughout.

#5 – Be careful not to ignore the obvious

Once you get into the game you can get really caught up in the excitement of it all. Watch out for ignoring the obvious. These escape rooms are designed for everyone—so while the escape rates are under 30%, the puzzles do actually need to be breakable. Unless there is a specific reason pointing you to a more complicated solution, try the obvious one first.

#6 – Don’t overthink things

Related, don’t overthink the puzzles. These games are designed for everyone. So if you’re solving some space odyssey puzzle and just so happen to be an astronomer or an aerospace engineer—your sweet space knowledge is not going to help you. In fact it will probably hold you back and stop you from seeing the obvious solutions. See tip #5.

#7 – Don’t get hung up on puzzles you can’t solve

Sometimes you will get stumped. It’s not necessarily because the puzzle is unsolvable—sometimes you’re just not seeing it clearly yet. (See tips #5 and #6.) The good thing about escape rooms is there’s lots to be doing—you’ll often have two or three puzzles on the go that you can be solving. Change tacks, switch puzzles, chances are the answer will come to you via another route. Just don’t keep hacking away at a puzzle that has got you stumped. It’s a race against time so keep moving.

#8 – If you’re really stuck, take a step back

Think about it from the gamemaster’s perspective. This isn’t really an evil doctor’s lair—this is an escape room. It was designed by a person and there is a solution. Everything that’s in the room is in there for a reason. Don’t get hung up on all the decoration. Think to yourself, why would this be here? Why was it put in this position? If something feels like it must be relevant, that’s probably because it is. Clear your mind and the answer will come to you.

#9 – Let yourself have fun

Sure it’s a race against the clock—sure you need to escape or your ego will be forever bruised. But really, this is a game and it’s supposed to be fun. If you escape every game without fail—but alienate all your friends in the process, you’re really not doing it right. Remember to have fun and let the experience take you where it’s going to go. That’s the whole point!

#10 – Be prepared to celebrate after

Make sure you’re got your post-escape location scoped out. Win or lose, you’re going to want to go out with your friends and debrief. We guarantee, even if you don’t escape, you guys will have a lot of laugh about after. People do some really funny things in escape rooms!

With these ten tips, you’ll be well on your way to being an escape room expert. You can fine tune your escape room strategy until you’re blue in the face—but our recommendation is to pay attention to tips #9 and #10 the most.
