Island Style Surf Adventures teaches surfing lessons on Kaanapli Beach, just north of Lahaina. Not only is this a great place to learn, it’s also one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

One of the most popular places in Maui, Kaanapali Beach is blessed with golden sand, sparkling water, plenty of amenities, and an awesome surfing school. These Maui surf lessons are catered to both beginners and advanced surfers, and Island Style Adventures Surf School has group lessons with one instructor to every three students, making sure you get the personalized attention you need. If you’re looking for something even more individualized, check out their private lessons. Most lessons are two hours long, so you can plan to spend the rest of your day enjoying the sunset from one of the many oceanfront cabanas or doing some shopping at Whaler’s Village nearby.

#2 – Hang Loose Surf Club

Get right down to business with Hang Loose Surf Club in Lahaina. This family-owned surf and paddleboard school offers Maui surf lessons on the beaches around downtown Lahaina where the waves break in shallow water making this a perfect spot for beginners. They don’t spend the bulk of the lesson perfecting your form on land but rather get you right into the water. Check out their group lessons as well as their private and semi-private options. #3 – We Paddle Maui
Lahaina

Conveniently located in Lahaina, We Paddle Maui is a great choice for first-time surfers on the island. They spend fifteen minutes with you on land going over the basics and teaching you about ocean safety, and then it’s into the water! They offer group lessons for private parties of five people max at $65 per person, making this one of the most affordable options in the area. Looking for the one-on-one thing? They offer private lessons too. These guys are also known for their surfing canoe tours–once you’ve mastered the board, get up on the canoe. It’s a wild once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

#4 – Big Kahuna Adventures
Kihei

Surfing out of Kalama Beach Park in South Maui, Big Kahuna Adventures is a great option if you’re staying in Kihei. This area is also known as “The Cove” and it’s one of the best places in Maui for beginners to learn to surf. The water is shallow and the waves break slowly making it perfect for first-timers. Also, the distance to paddle out to the waves is short, meaning you’ll get in more rides before you get tired. Just watch out for sea urchins here as they are everywhere. Fortunately, booties are included in the cost of your lesson with Big Kahuna, so they’ve got you covered.

Maui Surfer Girls is one of the only schools permitted to work out of Ukumehame Beach Park–a premium spot for first-time surfers. Boys, don’t be deterred–these lessons are for everyone, not just surfer girls.

#5 – Maui Surfer Girls

Maui Surfer Girls is Maui’s only female-owned surf school. While they welcome students of all stripes–men, women, and children–you can also specifically request a female instructor here if you want. They’re also one of the only surf schools permitted to offer surf lessons in the warm waters of Ukumehame Beach Park, also known as Thousand Peaks. This area is pretty pared down in terms of amenities as it’s really only a stretch of beach off the Honoapiilani Highway, but its long shore makes for multiple peaks which means there’s lots of space here for everyone to catch a wave. Check out Maui Surf Girls group lessons, which promise a 4:1 ratio of students to instructors, or secure a spot in their private or semi-private lessons. Best of all, this beach doesn’t get crowded like the other Maui surf lesson locations!

#6 – Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy

To get into the local spirit and catch some friendly waves you can take a lesson at Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy. This family-owned surf academy is one of the oldest in Maui, and they’ll teach you a bit about Hawaiian history as well as how to stand up on the board. They operate out of the beaches around downtown Lahaina, so they’re easy to get to and there are plenty of amenities nearby in case you want to go out for lunch after your surf lesson. Royal Hawaiian Surf Acamdeny’s lessons are suitable for kids as well as adults. One of the oldest surf schools on the island, you’ll learn a little surfing and a little Hawaiian history to boot.

#7 – Maui Resorts Surf and SUP

If you want to learn from a professional surfer then Maui Resorts Surf and SUP will put you in the hands of pro surfer Kevin Sullivan. Years of experience have given him the wisdom to read the waves, so if you’re ready to catch some big ones this is the place for you. Kingdom Riders Maui is a family-owned business that operates out of Lahaina and specializes in group and family lessons. They also offer a 6-hour kids surfing camp, if you’re looking for a little rest and relaxation during your trip. Go about your day while the little ones are learning how to ride waves and how green sea turtles maintain their shells. These guys offer a variety of surfing lessons for a variety of levels out of the protected south Maui bay near Kihei. Here you can take a beginner class, an intermediate class, an advanced class or even a three-day surfing lesson.
