7 Escape Room Safety Tips

Escape rooms provide a unique type of live entertainment. They’re fun, exciting, and social, plus they take you to whole new dimension of gaming. And with so many great escape rooms near you, it’s easy for anyone to jump in and give it a go. But it’s important to remember that you are still in a room, and the future of the world is not at stake, so you need to look after yourself and your friends. Keep in mind these top safety tips!

#1 – Wear comfy clothes

Sometimes you’ll need to crawl on the floor and peek under the tables, rugs, and shelves, so your attire must be comfortable and stretchy. Wear what you would usually wear when you go out for a casual walk, or a coffee. Don’t wear high heels, or super tight t-shirts. Also, nothing too fancy—you might get some dust on it, or stumble upon something in the dark.

#2 – Make use of your night vision

Escape rooms usually have dim lighting because of the overall dramatic atmosphere, but sometimes they can be completely dark. Escape room providers are always wary of leaving you in the pitch black, so it’s likely to happen for an effect or for only a short period time. But, when it happens, it’s up to you to be careful in the dark and not to break something or hurt yourself, and to look out for your friends. You don’t want any numbed toes or bruised arms.

#3 – Take care of your personal belongings

Some escape rooms have special lockers where you can leave your things. Some don’t, and in that case you’re going to want to be careful of your personal belongings. Don’t leave your cell phone, wallet, or credit cards in your coat pockets hanging up in the waiting room where just anyone can get at them. And for those of you with purses and bags, if you don’t want to carry them with you, you can always ask a staff member to look over your things.

#4 – Watch out for sharp objects

Sharp objects aren’t usually found in escape rooms, but in the cases where there is a letter opener or a Swiss army knife, use it with caution. In other cases, if there is broken or damaged equipment in the room, be careful of any sharp edges. Sometimes live games are so fast-paced and exciting, it’s easy to forget you are still just in a room, and not on the mission to save the world. Keep your wits about you and watch out for sharp objects.

#5 – Stay out of windows

If the room has windows, do not open them. There is no need to lean out and look outside. First of all, there are no clues out there, we guarantee it. Second of all, if you need to get out of the room for emergency purposes, there are other ways. Escape rooms always have systems in place for you to exit the room immediately. You don’t have to go through the window.

#6 – Be wary of electrical sockets

Don’t put your fingers in electrical sockets. Seriously, guys. Just don’t do it. No one in their right mind would ever put a clue inside an electrical socket. Unless you are playing a mystery game about electricity and the socket is obviously and clearly fake and part of the game design, you don’t need to touch it.

#7 – If you’re using force, you’re doing it wrong

Don’t try to tear down the wallpaper, break things, or climb bookshelves. You’d be surprised how many gamemasters catch their guests trying to climb through the ceiling. If you start using the room in a way it’s not supposed to be used, chances are you’re going to get hurt. It’s the golden rule of the escape room—use your brain, not force.

You guys probably think we’re a bunch of nervous Nancys now—but we’re only thinking of you and your safety. Overall, escape rooms are super safe activities. The only dangerous things you’ll usually find in there are scary props, haunting scenarios, and brain-twisting puzzles. But in the rare case that there is something dangerous, please keep your wits about you so that everyone can have a good time. Check out the escape room nearest you and remember to stay safe!
