From drinking hot chocolate by the fireplace to that special feeling when you wake up to find your street covered in glistening snow, there are a lot of reasons to love winter. But sometimes it can be hard to get out and enjoy all the season has to offer. Well, grab your long johns because there is no end to the fun you can have in and around Toronto in the winter, from dog sledding to snow tubing and cocktail making, check out these 9 fun things you can get up to.
#1 – Go snow tubing at Snow Valley
Take a road trip to Barrie for the day and see some real winter. Take your whole family or organize a wintery get-together with friends at Snow Valley Resort and check out their awesome snow tubing trails. Get five rides for $20, or plan to go from Wednesday to Friday when you can get unlimited passes for $15 or $20. Stock up on winter accessories, put on your warmest clothes, and have a great time.
#2 – Learn to make warming cocktails
Nothing can make you all warm inside like a delicious and spicy cocktail. There’s no better way to learn about ingredients and preparation than in a cocktail workshop. Grab your friends and head to the Toronto Institute of Bartending in the Distillery District for a private, 90-minute workshop where you’ll sample six different drinks and enjoy a full-sized one. Take notes and recreate the mixology magic for your next party.
#3 – Check out live DJ skate parties
Saturdays are reserved for incredible parties at the Harbourfront Centre Skating Rink. Until the 18th of February plan to spend your Saturdays skating to the hottest tunes of Toronto’s club scene. There are also special guests, fire pits to keep you warm, a cafe bar from Boxcar Social, and the newest dance, electro, pop and Afrobeat hits to get you moving. Best of all? It’s totally free.
#4 – Go dog sledding in the Ontario countryside
Toronto Adventures takes you to snowy parts of Ontario for an exciting day of dog sledding. They’ll pick you and up and drop you back off from either York Mills or Kelle subway stations, so you can partake even if you don’t have a car. Expect to play with puppies in the snow, eat roasted marshmallows by the fire, enjoy delicious hot chocolate, and soak in the beauty of Ontario like never before.
#5 – Take a warming whiskey walking tour
Have some touristy fun in your city while enjoying some of the best whiskey bars and late-night cocktail haunts. Check out the drink tours by Toronto Food Tours. Our favorites for the season are the Urban Whiskey trail, which takes you on a journey of Canadian whiskey and food pairings, or the Tour of Hotel Bars, which cruises through the cozy and almost forgotten bars of Toronto’s classic hotels.
#6 – Get creative with pottery making classes
What’s better in the cold months than staying cozy inside with friends? Get fired up this winter with a pottery making class. Depending on your budget, check out the Gardiner Museum’s weekly drop-in classes for $15 per person or the 10-week pottery class at The Clay Design Studio at Harbord and Brunswick.
#7 – Take a tour around the Distillery
The Distillery District is remarkably beautiful in the winter. Enjoy the best this trendy district has to offer on a warming food and drink tour. Learn about the amazing Victorian architecture and life under Prohibition while sample delicious whiskey, local craft beers, and other treats on Go Tours Canada‘s food and drink tours.
